Create a cosy home for winter

And just like that, autumn is upon us already! The days are getting shorter and the nights are most definitely getting cooler, as we edge closer and closer towards those chilly winter months ahead.

It’s not all doom and gloom though – winter presents the perfect opportunity to spend more time indoors. It’s a time for catching up on a good book, playing games with our loved ones, spending time homemaking and treasuring the downtime we so often need, but forget, during the warmer months.

Perhaps you’ve heard of the Nordic words ‘hygge’ or ‘mysa’? ‘Hygge’ is a prominent part of the Danish lifestyle, which essentially describes the art of creating intimacy and cosiness – think reading by a fire, with a hot cup of tea. In Swedish, ‘mysa’ loosely translates to being engaged in an activity that brings comfort, contentedness or pleasure, such as lying in the sun on a winter morning.

So, on that note, we’ll be taking a leaf out of these cultures’ books and savouring these philosophies throughout the upcoming winter. Are you ready to join us? Here are some of our favourite products to keep you cosy this winter!

Deepen the colour palette of your home

Love pops of colour? Or perhaps you’re into more neutral schemes? Whichever way you go, opting for darker tones like burgundy, mustard, emerald or charcoal can help to create a warmer atmosphere in your space.

There are lots of ways to achieve this, depending on your budget. Go big with some statement furniture or incorporate some smaller elements such as artwork, rugs, bed linen or cushions. We’ve got our eye on this gorgeous Carnaby Fabric Modular Lounge Suite from Harvey Norman. POA.

Amore the floor

The addition of a rug can completely lift the atmosphere of a room. Opt for a dramatic, bold pattern to create a focal point in the space or go for a smaller pattern like Carpet Call’s Amore rug. The finer pattern achieves a more subdued look with just a hint of rich colour that can be picked up through other elements like vases or cushions. Amore Rug, $220 from Carpet Call.

Illuminate with luxe lighting

Don’t forget some ambient lighting! Cold nights are perfect for curling up with a good book and a hot cocoa so it’s worthwhile investing in some good lighting.

If you’re a lover of versatility, the Moss 1 Light Touch Table Lamp from Beacon Lighting is a great option! The design is smooth and sleek thanks to its touch lamp functionality and can double as either a bedside or desktop table lamp. Winning! Moss 1 light table lamp, $79.95 from Beacon Lighting

Add a touch of layered texture

Just as you would with winter clothing, winter decor is all about the layering! Don’t be afraid to mix velvet with fur, and knitted throws with shag pile rugs. Patterned and embellished fabrics work well to add another tactile dimension.

Aesthetically speaking, adding layers of texture helps to create a cosy and comfortable environment. On a practical level though, covering up otherwise cooler areas of the home such as timber and tiled floors actually helps to warm the home up!

We are so in love with this styling by Adairs! It features earthy mustard and terracotta tones plus a myriad of textures that make this room so enticing. Home Republic Vintage Washed Corduroy Quilted Redwood Collection, Adairs.

Too many cushions? No such thing! Maximise your comfort levels in the cooler months by adding an extra cushion here and there. On the couch? Yes! The bed? For sure! Take your pick of velvet, corduroy, linen and more from Domayne’s extensive range of cushions. Velvet cushions from $39.00 from Domayne.
